The Environmental Port Index
The Environmental Port Index (EPI) is a smart digital tool that monitors and measures the environmental performance of ships while they are docked. It provides clear, data-driven insights to support more sustainable practices in global shipping.
Project Brief
When the EPI team approached Transform Creative in 2019, they had an innovative tool but no brand identity. They needed to build a public-facing presence and a focused marketing strategy. Our role was to help shape their story, define their brand and bring it to life across a range of digital and physical channels.
We quickly identified that a bold website, engaging video content and a strong presence at key industry events would be central to their success.
Creative Approach
We kicked things off in Bergen, Norway, where we ran a brand workshop with senior stakeholders from the EPI and the Port of Bergen. This helped define the brand’s personality, values, vision and tone of voice. From there, we developed a clear creative brief and a tailored writing style guide to ensure consistency across all future communications.
Execution
We began with a launch video to introduce the EPI. Scripted by wordsmith Jonathon Nielsen of Words for Brands, the film combined curated stock footage with carefully selected music to create an atmospheric and memorable story.
To support their growing presence, we created a new website. Designed by Mr Smith Creative and developed by Pete Urwin, epiport.org became the EPI’s digital home and main platform for outreach.
We also created a comprehensive set of brand guidelines covering both design and tone of voice, helping the EPI team communicate clearly and consistently across all channels, now and in the future.
Impact
This project delivered real results. The EPI campaign picked up a coveted D&AD Pencil for Future Impact – a major award in the design and advertising world, judged against thousands of global entries.
But more importantly, the tool gained traction. What began as a local Norwegian initiative has now been adopted in ports across Sweden, Iceland, Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Portugal – a clear sign that the EPI’s message is making waves.
Client Feedback
“Andy is a delight to work with. He's full of creative energy, enthusiasm and ideas, which is what you want from a designer. At the same time he's also very professional and hardworking. I can always trust him to get the job done with the minimum of fuss. Andy has a lot of experience of the design industry which gives him a great understanding of how to pull a design project together and give clients what they need. I would definitely recommend him.”
