Rooted in Timber, Built for the Future:
A Brand Refresh with Real Strength
Elevating a fifth-generation Scottish business into a modern, unified identity.
James Jones & Sons Ltd is one of the UK’s largest and most innovative timber processing companies. A family-owned business with five generations of experience, they are a leader in sustainable forestry and timber engineering across Europe.
With operations spanning the full timber supply chain, they are a benchmark for quality and innovation in the UK forestry and construction sectors.
The Challenge
In 2020, the team at James Jones & Sons brought in a new brand manager to sharpen their identity and bring consistency across their marketing. While the business had grown rapidly, their brand design and communication materials had not kept pace.
They needed a clearer, more professional presence – one that reflected the scale, ambition and success of a modern timber manufacturer.
The Creative Process
I was asked to lead the creative direction and visual refresh. My first step was a full brand audit, covering everything from the website and brochures to manuals, signage, advertising and video content. I examined materials across all divisions – including sawn timber, pallet products and engineered timber – and identified opportunities to strengthen and unify the brand.
Drawing on my experience in branding for manufacturing and construction, I proposed a new visual system that could work across every part of the business.
Design Execution
New Visual Library
A curated library of imagery was developed using high-quality stock photography. This gave the business a solid visual foundation that could be applied across campaigns, websites, brochures and internal communications.
Expanded Colour Palette
I extended the existing colour range with new, complementary shades to add flexibility and impact across print and digital formats. This helped bring greater cohesion to their marketing materials, especially in sustainability-focused content.
Modern Typography
A new typeface family was introduced to give the brand a more contemporary and confident tone of voice.
Clear Brand Guidelines
I produced a practical set of brand guidelines to futureproof the identity and ensure consistency across every touchpoint – from timber marketing materials to internal presentations.
Results and Ongoing Work
The new branding captured exactly what James Jones & Sons had become – a trusted, forward-thinking leader in the timber sector. The refined identity made a strong impression with staff, customers and stakeholders, aligning their visual brand with their reputation for excellence.
Since the refresh, I’ve continued to support the business with design and marketing materials across every division – from engineered timber brochures and product leaflets to exhibition stands and campaign rollouts.
Together, we’ve built a brand that reflects the strength of Scottish timber, the innovation of modern manufacturing, and the values of a business rooted in sustainability.
